| Did you know these Birmingham chain restaurants are halal? - Birmingham Mail Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:00 AM PST We're lucky to live in a city that offers a wide variety of cuisines from all over the world as well as catering for different nutritional and religious requirements. There are some great halal restaurants in Brum perfect for celebrating Ramadan this spring. Halal only restaurants are generally halal certified and Birmingham's big chain halal restaurants can display the HFA (Halal Food Authority) logo inside the restaurants or on the menu. There is also another food regulatory body HMA (Halal Monitoring Committee) which some consider adheres to a stricter definition of halal than HFA approved places. Many of our chain restaurants have halal only and non-halal restaurants. Some of these chains also serve halal chicken in dishes in their restaurants without labelling. Nando's Nando's has 434 restaurants all over the UK, 76 of which serve only halal chicken. In Birmingham the Broad Street and Star City restaurants are halal. Grand Central Nando's is non-halal. Nando's website states:"A small proportion of chicken sold in our other restaurants may also be halal. This may happen on rare occasions if there are, for example, issues with supply. However, all of our chickens are packaged, labelled and distributed to their intended restaurant. It adds: "A small proportion of chicken sold in our other restaurants is also halal and is not currently labelled when served."  Nando's restaurants in West Bromwich and Wolverhampton are halal. Their website states: "Our chicken and lamb sausages are halal, our fennel sausage is not. Our Bresaola is not considered halal. "However, we can say that the product is free of ingredients that would be considered Haram. Please ask your server about our daily changing specials. 19 Bennetts Hill, B2 5QJ Celebz American Diner Celebz American Diner sells halal only meat and is halal. All the American diner favourites are on the menu including New York Club sandwich, flame-grilled burgers , as well as shakes and big desserts. Longbridge Lane, Longbridge 203 Corporation Street, B4 6SE College Street, B31 2US 358 Ladypool Road Wildwood This restaurant chain focuses on Italian and Mediterranean flavours and opened in March on New Street. All the chicken dishes which includes chicken burger, oven roasted boneless chicken and chicken Caesar salad are halal. This information is not on the menu. 66 New Street, B2 4EU Las Iguanas The South American restaurant chain which recently opened a new restaurant on Temple Street, has a choice of halal and non-halal dishes. On their website the chain states: "Our chicken, lamb & duck are halal in all of our branches, other meats are not halal including beef and chorizo. "All halal poultry and meat is pre-stunned in line with EU guidelines and our commitment to animal welfare." Somerset House 37 Temple St, Birmingham B2 5DP 70 Hurst St, Birmingham B5 4TD Tamatanga This lively Indian restaurant chain which also serves a variety of street food as well as cocktails and mocktails, serves a strictly halal food menu. It has been HMC certified. Orion Building Navigation Street B5 4AX Comptair Libanais This Middle Eastern restaurant chain at Grand Central in March , sells mezzes, wraps, tagines, grills and Mana'esh, which is Lebanese style pizza. The eatery states: "The meat in all of our restaurants comes from approved and certified halal suppliers. 30 Grand Central, Stephenson Place, B2 4BF German Doner Kebab This kebab chain in the city centre recently expanded to Balsall Heath. On the menu: "We serves 100% lean halal meat (chicken and beef), imported from Germany, across all our branches in the UK. "We also use the same meat supplier for our stores in the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, Sweden and Bahrain to ensure consistency throughout the German Doner Kebab international brand." They have a halal certificate from Halal Quality Control. 548-550 Moseley Road B12 9AD 84 Bull Street, B4 6AB Tortilla This Mexican burrito place at Grand Central is mega popular for a quick lunchtime bite. There is a halal certification for the Chicken only. All the other meats are non halal. Tortilla, Grand Central KFC There are 50 KFC restaurants in the Midlands. On their website KFC says it is currently trialling halal in some stores. They state: "Feedback from consumers has indicated that there is significant demand for halal food from KFC, and we've chosen these stores as they are in areas where we expect demand for halal restaurants. "Wherever possible, we have taken steps to ensure that these restaurants are within a 7 mile radius of a non-halal store in order to cater to all of our customers' needs." The menu does not say which dishes are halal - but you can find this information on the website. On the website the restaurant states: "The halal chicken is halal at source; our kitchens don't operate halal procedures. All our other meats are non halal. "Dishes on our menu that contain chicken which is halal at source are: Penne al Pollo della Casa, Pizza Pollo Piccante con Pancetta, Risotto con Pollo e Funghi, Rigatoni con Zucchini e Pesto (if you choose to add chicken) Calzone Pollo and our Kid's Pizza Pollo e Prosciutto." The rest of the menu is non-halal. 56 New Street B2 4DU 237 Hagley Road, B16 9RR C Yakinori noodle bar Yakinori is a super popular Japanese noodle and bento restaurant and we gave it a rave review for its delicious and affordable dishes when we visited the eaterie. The menu is halal and includes chilli noodles, ramen, sushi, bento box, teriyaki. There are two Yaki Nori restaurants in the city. 520 Bristol Rd, Selly Oak, B29 6BD Grand Central B2 4XJ Pho This is another super popular restaurant at Grand Central offering mouthwatering Vietnamese street food. Pho is Vietnam's national dish – a nutritious noodle soup. This chain has a variety of chicken dishes on the menu and they are all halal. You can choose from dishes including seasoned, crispy chicken wings served with sriracha and Phở gà chicken breast in chicken stock. The rest of the menu is non-halal. And 202 of these Subway stores are halal - selling only certified halal meats. The stores have clear halal only labelling. Jaqk's Chicken & Chips is a bit of an institution in Moseley for offering a cheap late night bite to eat. There is also one in Shirley. There will be another branch opening at The Cube in the city centre later this year. As well as chicken bites, chicken fingers, you can choose from a variety of chicken burgers - such as the Mighty Jacq Burger - chicken fillet with cheese, lettuce, hash brown & mayo. Slim Chickens This fried chicken joint in Grand Central opened in June 2019. There is a range of burger choices as well as their famous tenders menu - hand breaded and deep fried chicken strips. Maybe you want to try somewhere new or find out which premises are the cleanest, with top marks from environmental health inspectors. Indian food is always a popular choice, especially in Birmingham - the birthplace of the Balti. The city has a Balti Triangle where many of the Indian restaurants are located although there are lots more scattered across the city. With so many to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones are the best.  We searched through the Food Standard Agency's food hygiene ratings for Indian restaurants and Indian takeaways in Birmingham with a top rating of five. At the end of an inspection by city council environmental health officers, a business is given one of six ratings from 0 to 5. The top rating of 5 means the establishment has very good hygiene standards.  Video Loading We also looked at TripAdvisor to see if the curry house had any customer reviews that backed up its high rating and gave a bit more explanation. Since we last listed the top rated Indian eateries in December 2017, several on our original list have been inspected again and retained their ratings, while 15 have been added after attaining a five and ten others have lost their top score.
