Squirt Is A First For Aquarium Of Niagara

The Aquarium of Niagara welcomed a new animal to its collection Friday.

Squirt, a Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, became the first sea turtle on display in the aquarium's 58-year history. He's being housed in an exhibit space previously occupied by blacktip reef sharks.

Aquarium President and CEO Gary Siddall said they decided to bring a sea turtle in due to the facility's commitment to endangered and non-releasable animals. They also felt they were not telling the best story possible with some animals brought in for a period then moving on to another facility.

"It made sense to us that we would want to bring in an animal who had a compelling story who needed our help to provide a forever home," Siddall said.

Squirt, a male with an estimated age of between 15 and 25 years, suffered permanent injuries from a boat propeller in April 2015. He was brought to the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, who determined his jaw and left eye injuries made him unable to forage and eat live prey.

Due to Squirt's growth, it was determined to move him to a larger exhibit to meet his needs.

"When guests make authentic connections with our animal ambassadors, they are more likely to care about those animals' wild counterparts," Siddall said. "We've found that animals whose stories illustrate challenges they faced in their natural environment are most compelling for our visitors."

The Kemp's Ridley species is the smallest, rarest, and most endangered species of sea turtle, mainly due to falling to predators while nesting, humans collecting their eggs and getting caught in fishing nets. They are normally found in the Gulf of Mexico and along the United States' eastern seaboard.

The aquarium is home to 120 species of aquatic animals, with California sea lions, harbor seals and grey seals also among the non-releasable residents.

The seas turtle display is on the aquarium's first floor, with its water capacity increased from 7,500 to 10,000 gallons in order to meet certain federal requirements. It was remodeled to look like the natural environment of Florida reefs, with snappers, lookdowns, grunts and a moray eel sharing the tank with Squirt.

Informational signs explain how human activity impacts marine wildlife.

The whole display cost the aquarium $175,000 to complete, of which $125,000 is from its own committed funds, $35,000 from the Cataract Tourism Fund, and $15,000 from private donations, with NOCO being the exhibit's sponsor.

In honor of Squirt's arrival, the aquarium is offering limited edition apparel featuring the turtle, with proceeds helping benefit the animals under the aquarium's care.

My approach is psychodynamic and is rooted in attachment theory and family systems, while incorporating CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and EMDR when appropriate.

I am an RCC specializing in treating addiction, trauma, mood disorders, and interpersonal issues. My approach is rooted in the belief that a greater awareness of where our actions and reactions come from can give us the power to change. I work with my clients to understand how their attachment styles and life experiences have informed how they relate to others and to themselves. With this knowledge we work together to address unwanted behaviours and implement new coping skills for emotional regulation and communication.

I present my clients with tools and techniques from mindfulness-based practices, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, and psychodynamic theory.

Hi and thank you looking at my profile. I work mostly out of a strengths-based perspective which means that when we talk about the things you want to change in your life, I'm not only considering what you struggle with but also all the things that you're great at. In my experience, we all have skills and tools that we might not be aware of and part of my role is to uncover them with you. In some cases, we might also want to add to your toolkit to give you more options to deal with life's challenges. In the past, I've helped clients work through depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, communication skills, and trauma.

I received my clinical training in individual psychodynamic therapy at the Argyle Institute, Montreal.

In psychotherapy, we work through our unique stories and struggles, build emotional resilience, and develop greater insight into our selves. Working with a psychotherapist allows us to safely reckon with our destructive patterns, and to begin to weave new patterns that better support us. We deepen our awareness of our inner worlds, and in the process, we transform our relationships with ourselves and with each other.

I practice psychodynamic therapy, integrating mindfulness and somatic therapy. I often see people who have histories of growing up in invalidating or otherwise harmful environments in which they were not heard, and rarely attuned to. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, attachment injuries or CPTSD, heightened shame, existential questions, and a desire to develop a better relationship with themselves - they have largely moved beyond immediate trauma responses and are looking to explore more deeply.

Our thoughts, our emotions, and our bodies can sometimes become overwhelmed. When this happens, it can impact many areas of our lives. The good news is, there are powerful and proven tools that can help us to heal. I believe that we heal by gaining a sense of connection and wholeness. The foundation of my approach is building a strong working relationship. This involves respect, trust, and compassion. Gentleness is also very important to me.

Person with city landscape in the background icon Psychodynamic Counsellors Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based? Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What's more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended. How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client's challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work? Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective. What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
